OCLab-II Exam Review

General check list: to review topics for Organic chemistry – 2 Lab Exam:

(1) To review organic chemistry laboratory safety procedures and rules.

(2) Must know the shape, sizes and name of glass wares, apparatus, instruments, and other items used in the lab.

(3)  Must know the design of chemical reaction apparatus assembly.

(4) To analyze of IR and NMR spectra.

(5) Must know the type and name of chemical reactions performed in the lab. 

(6) Must know how to write and draw chemical structures of chemical reactions, starting materials, reagents, solvents.

(7) Must know the reaction conditions (time and temperature).

(8) Must know workup techniques involve isolating the products.

(9) Must remember melting points of pure compounds.

(10) Must know how to calculate limiting reactant, theoretical yields, experimental yield.

(11) Must know how to analyze the percentage of purity of the products from UV-visible spectra and percentage yield (for aspirin and methyl orange lab).

(12) Review all the material from your quizzes, post-lab questions, lab notebook and lab manual.

A. Infrared (IR) spectrophotometry

B. Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) spectrophotometry

  1. Know what is 1H (proton) NMR and 13C (carbon) NMR spectrophotometry.
  2. How to distinguish 1H (proton) NMR and 13C (carbon) NMR spectra.
  3. How to analyze 1H (proton) NMR and 13C (carbon) NMR spectra.
  4. Must know terminology and definitions associated in NMR spectra.
  5. Must know how to deduce the chemical structure from NMR spectra peaks.
